**Senior alert:** Should you drink airplane water?

by

Probably not.

Senior citizens generally have a weaker immune system than youngsters. it’s important we avoid things that can enter our bodies and do harm.

Social media posts show many flight attendants refuse to drink any water out of the airplane storage tanks.  A 2015 study on aircraft water quality published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that the water tanks are “conducive for microbial growth.

The Evironmental Protection Agency (EPA) found in 2004 that airplane water tanks were breeding grounds for coliform bacteria.  This led to legislation that required the tanks to be cleaned once a year.

Once a year?  That’s all?

Unless I am served water from a bottle with a screw cap, I’m not drinking it.  Same goes for coffee.  I’ll only drink a cup of coffee served on a plane if I’m desperate.

Thankfully, there is a solution.  You’ll find water refill stations in most airport these days.  Bring an empty thermos or water bottle and refill it once past security.  However, don’t make the same mistake I made by having more than 3.4 ounces in it.  TSA made me either forfeit the bottle or go out of the secured area and get back in line to go through security again.
